LIPETSK, January 18 (RIA Novosti, Andrei Novikov) - Monkeys on display in a zoo in the Russian city of Lipetsk will be kept warm in near record low temperatures by an old Russian remedy, alcohol, the zoo director said Wednesday.
Alexander Osipov said monkeys at the zoo, 430 miles south of Moscow, would be given 100 grams of wine three times a day in order to prevent them from catching a cold as severe frosts swept the country.
He said the rest of the animals in the zoo are doing well, but if temperatures drop further they will be moved to warm premises.
Extremely low temperatures hit the Russian capital and most of the country's regions Wednesday with the temperature in Moscow nearly breaking the minus 32°C (-25.6°F) record.
Meteorologists said they expected temperatures in Moscow and the Moscow Region to hit a record low of -35°F (-31°F).
