MOSCOW, April 5 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Federal Security Service said Wednesday that no decision on the fate of two foreigners detained in the Far East region of Chukotka had been made.
Border guards detained a Briton and an American Tuesday. The foreigners claimed they had crossed the Bering Strait, which divides Asian Russia and North America, on a journey from South America to Britain.
"The detained foreigners have passports, commercials visas, tents and Arctic equipment," a spokesman for the local border guard service said.
He added that they also had a Colt Magnum pistol.
A source in the law enforcement agencies said, "The foreigners were likely to be extradited from Russia soon after the relevant juridical procedures."
The British and U.S. embassies said they were checking the circumstances of the detention.
