MOSCOW, May 6 (RIA Novosti) - Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Kislyak said Saturday that Russia was unhappy with a draft UN Security Council resolution on Iran's controversial nuclear program, but that an offer to enrich Iran's uranium remained open.
"It is too early to say which changes should be made to the draft resolution to satisfy Russia. At present consultations are ongoing," Kislyak said following talks with the EU3 negotiators on the Iran crisis.
The UN Security Council is currently considering a resolution drafted by the United States, Britain and France that could see economic sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic for its failure to cooperate fully and openly with the UN's nuclear watchdog.
Russia has consistently been against the imposition of sanctions.
Kislyak also said Russia's offer to create a joint venture to enrich uranium for Iran's nuclear program on Russian soil was still open.
"Our proposal on a JV is still on the negotiating table," he said. "But this is only an instrument to restore trust from the International Atomic Energy Agency and the international community in Iran's nuclear program."
Iran has not yet accepted the Russian offer, but has recently proposed establishing a uranium enrichment consortium with Japan and other countries.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad confirmed Thursday that Iran planned to accomplish uranium enrichment on an industrial scale.
The hard-line president said Iran was interested in continuing its activities on the basis of international principles and laws, and under the control of the IAEA until it achieved industrial production of nuclear fuel for power stations.
