"The Iranian people are strong enough to defend their own rights," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said.

JAKARTA, May 10 (RIA Novosti) - The Iranian people are capable of defending their rights to nuclear technologies and are shocked by the international community's misleading decisions, the president said Wednesday.

Under a new package of proposals that the foreign ministers of China, the United States, Russia, France, Britain and Germany drafted at a meeting in New York Monday, Iran could be granted political and economic, and possibly security privileges if it agrees with the international community's demands to abandon its controversial nuclear program.

"The Iranian people are strong enough to defend their own rights," President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said.

Ahmadinejad, currently on a visit to Indonesia, also reiterated that Iran's nuclear program was purely peaceful.

Speaking at a news conference after a meeting with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who had offered help in resolving the crisis around the program, Ahmadinejad said Tehran had no intention of giving in to international pressure to suspend a program to enrich uranium, which can be used for generating energy and creating bomb-grade material.
