MAKHACHKALA, May 16 (RIA Novosti) - Two militants were apparently killed Tuesday during a counter-terrorism operation in the north Caucasus region of Daghestan, the local interior ministry branch said.

The militants were surrounded in a five-story building in the town of Kizil-Yurt in central Daghestan, 50 kilometers (about 30 miles) from the regional capital, Makhachkala. Police officers supported by armored vehicles stormed the building after a prolonged exchange of fire.

A ministry source said the deaths of the militants would be confirmed after an examination of the apartment in which they had holed up. Preliminary reports said one militant had died after falling off a third-story balcony.

An official involved in the operation identified the militants as Abdulmazhid Kabashilayev and Ibragim Ibragimov, and said both are on the federal wanted list.

A police officer died in hospital of wounds sustained during the fighting, and ten other people, including a senior Interior Ministry official and a local resident, were wounded.
