MOSCOW, May 25 (RIA Novosti) - Dmitry Medvedev, one of two men touted as presidential candidates in 2008, will chair a new state commission on the development of television and radio broadcasting in Russia, the government press service said Thursday.

The press service said that new body would coordinate the executive's broadcasting activity, including in conceptual development, consider ways to improve legislation in the sphere and focus on ways to develop television and radio.

The commission, whose establishment was signed off by Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov, will also determine the main areas for broadcasting development with account for the state's capabilities, particularly in the economic and financial fields.

Medvedev, who was the head of the Kremlin administration before he was appointed to his current post last year in November, is generally viewed as a potential successor to President Vladimir Putin. His main rival for the post is thought to be Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, who is also a deputy prime minister.
