MOSCOW, June 23 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's upper house of parliament, the Federation Council will consider the candidacy of the president's nominee for the post of top prosecutor Friday.
Yury Chaika, the incumbent justice minister, was nominated for the post of Prosecutor General Monday to replace Vladimir Ustinov, who was removed from office June 2. The reasons for his removal remain largely opaque.
Chaika, 55, has a long service record with the Prosecutor General's Office. He was Deputy Prosecutor General in 1995-1999 and served as acting Prosecutor General in 1999 under President Boris Yeltsin.
With Chaika's candidacy approved by two committees in the Federation Council - the committee on judicial and legal affairs and the defense and security committee - and unanimously by the house, few doubt his appointment.
"I am absolutely sure that there will be no difficulties for the Federation Council to make a decision," Speaker Sergei Mironov said Monday.
Chaika needs to secure a simple majority, 90 votes, plus one to be appointed.
