NOVOSIBIRSK, June 22 (RIA Novosti) - An eight-month-old baby has been killed after an elevator plunged six stories in a Siberian apartment building, local prosecutors said Friday.

The tragedy occurred Thursday when a woman pushed the baby's pram into the elevator car. The mother was still outside the car when a faulty cable is believed to have snapped, causing the car to fall. The infant was killed instantly.

Prosecutors in the city of Omsk, 2,500km (1,600 miles) east of Moscow, have launched an investigation into the tragedy.
