Russia's Supreme Court releases suspect in 2002 Kaspiisk bombing
The court reduced Khanali Umakhanov's prison term by two years and released him as his term had expired. Umakhanov was charged with involvement in a blast attack during Victory Day celebrations on May 9, 2002, when more than 40 servicemen and civilians, including children, were killed and dozens wounded.
Last October, a jury acquitted cleared Umakhanov of terrorism and murder charges but found him guilty of purchasing and then handing over to terrorists a remote control for a mine that went off in Kaspiisk. The Supreme Court sentenced him to four years in jail.
Umakhanov, whose trial began in June 2005 on charges of murder, terrorism, and banditry, was arrested in Moscow in 2002 for petty theft.
