Mosenergo to build massive power plant near Moscow

MOSCOW, June 29 (RIA Novosti) - Mosenergo [RTS: MSNG] is planning to build a 4,000-megawatt electric power plant in the Moscow area, the utility's chief executive said Thursday.

"Four thousand megawatts is one third of the Moscow grid's current capacity," Anatoly Kopsov told reporters.

He said the construction of the "super-plant" would start in 2008, and that it would operate using either solid fuel or natural gas.

The first stage of work at the Petrovskaya plant in the Moscow Region's Shatura district, southeast of the capital, was completed in 1997, but the plant has never come online. Kopsov said officials would travel to the site Friday to consider restarting the project.

The reliability of Moscow's electric grid has been an object of concern since last May, when a fire at an outdated substation triggered massive blackouts in the city and the surrounding region.
