MOSCOW, June 30 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's defense minister issued a stark warning Friday when he said the representatives of individual states and terrorists had achieved some success in their attempts to obtain sensitive technologies.
Sergei Ivanov, who is also a deputy prime minister, told a news conference that this was a matter of grave concern.
Ivanov said that control over Russia's export of sensitive technologies, which are linked with weapons of mass destruction, was a top national-security priority.
"Russia is conducting serious work to improve the control system over the export of sensitive technologies," Ivanov said.
"We have already achieved substantial and real results in the sphere of export control over WMD," the minister said, adding that the results had been achieved both at the legislative level as well as at a level of cooperation with other countries.
He said the work to improve the system of export control should be continued: "Any system becomes outdated and ineffective if it is not upgraded and that is why we are looking at modern trends and information technologies."
Ivanov added that it was also important to maintain control over not only materials involved in WMD production, but also scientists working on them.
