Chechnya PM Kadyrov demands checks of reconstruction spending

MOSCOW, July 3 (RIA Novosti) - Chechnya's prime minister demanded Monday that the republic's interior ministry investigate how funds allocated for the region's post-war reconstruction have been spent this year.

Chechnya has been largely ruined by years of fighting dating back to the start of the first military campaign launched in 1994 to "restore constitutional order" and accusations have been frequently made that money allotted by Moscow for rebuilding has been misspent.

"I am asking for any offense in this field to be exposed and the appropriate measures taken regardless of the rank of the person involved, whether he be a minister or any other high-ranking official," Ramzan Kadyrov said at a meeting with ministry officials.

Kadyrov, the son of late Kremlin-backed leader Akhmad Kadyrov, who was assassinated in 2004, said he intended to root out corruption with government funds.

"Every single kopek must be spent properly. We do not have much money, which is why the budget must be spent as economically as the family budget is spent," Kadyrov said calling for investigative work into economic crimes to be improved.
