MOSCOW, July 12 (RIA Novosti) - A major evacuation has been ordered at a Russian military airfield in Siberia after a river dam collapsed flooding the area, the head of the Air Force's press service said Wednesday.
Col. Alexander Drobyshevsky said the water level at the Dzhida airfield in the Chita Region, about 3,770 miles east of Moscow, was rising by 20 centimeters an hour, so all the personnel and hardware had been evacuated.
"The personnel's lives are not in danger," he said.
Drobyshevsky also said the flood posed no threat to servicemen and their families living in a nearby town.
"The entire airfield and its support facilities are being monitored closely," he said.
