FM Lavrov to head Russia delegation to Asean forum

MOSCOW, July 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's foreign minister will meet with his Southeast Asian counterparts later this month as the region's largest grouping gathers in Malaysia for an annual forum, a ministry news release said Monday.

Sergei Lavrov will head the Russian delegation to the Association of South East Asian Nations' July 24-28 ministerial meeting in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, and the Asean Regional Forum.

According to the ministry, the Asean Regional Forum will focus "on topical issues of regional and international security, including the development of intercultural dialogue, the Korean peninsula's nuclear problem, the fight against global terrorism, the situation in and around Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan, non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and natural disaster management."

Russian-Asean meetings on the forum's sidelines will discuss ways to boost cooperation in combating global terrorism and coping with the aftermath of natural disasters and industrial accidents, as well as economic, technological and cultural ties.

Asean comprises Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, Brunei, Myanmar and Vietnam. Russia is one of the 10-nation group's partners, along with the United States, Japan, India China, and European Union countries.
