MOSCOW, August 11 (RIA Novosti) - The number of mobile phone subscriptions in Russia reached 143.07 million at the end of July, representing 98.5% national penetration, a research firm said Tuesday.

Advanced Communications and Media Consulting said the number of subscriptions (valid SIM cards) was up 2.8 million from the June figure of 140.3 million.

The number of subscriptions does not reflect the number of cell phone users, as many people hold many active SIM cards. Penetration in Moscow reached 149% at the end of July, up from 146.8% in June.

ACM Consulting said the country's penetration at the end of June was 96.6%. The number of mobile phone subscriptions at the end of July was 40% higher than in July 2005 (up 40.6 million from 102 million), representing a 28-point increase in penetration.

The number of subscriptions in the regions as of the end of July totaled 109.5 million, up by around 2% month-on-month. Penetration in the regions climbed 11.9 points, from 88% to 89.9%.
