Unemployment down 1.3% in July

MOSCOW, August 21 (RIA Novosti) - Unemployment in Russia in July 2006 went down by 1.3% year-on-year, to 5.43 million people, including 1.721 million of officially registered as unemployed, or 0.7% of the figure, the state statistics body said Monday.

Compared with June 2005, the number of unemployed in Russia grew 0.6%, but the number of those officially registered as jobless declined 4.3%, the Federal State Statistics Service reported.

In July, the unemployed accounted for 7.3% of the economically active population, which stands at 74.6 million people (or 51% of Russians), who are mainly employed in large and medium-sized enterprises.
