Air crash widow's passport stolen in northwest Russia

MURMANSK, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - A doctor in northwest Russia whose husband lost his life in a plane crash in Ukraine had her money and passport stolen from her cabinet on Tuesday, the day before she was to leave with other victims' relatives for the crash site.

The Russian Tu-154 crashed Tuesday afternoon in eastern Ukraine en route from a Russian Black Sea resort to St. Petersburg, killing all passengers and crew.

The documents and money were stolen from Natalia Batova's cabinet in a Murmansk hospital, preventing her from flying out. Police issued temporary identification allowing her to buy a new plane ticket, but the document would not be sufficient for her to fill in documentation relating to her husband's death in Ukraine, the hospital said.

St. Petersburg-based Pulkovo Airlines, which owns the plane, said that all 170 people on board, including 45 children, were killed in the disaster. Other sources suggested that 171 passengers and crew lost their lives.

The acting head of the Murmansk Region's migration service, Boris Makerevich, said a new passport will be issued to the widow by Wednesday evening.

"The procedure for issuing a passport takes a certain amount of time, but considering the exceptional circumstances, we have made allowances. A passport will be issued by the end of the day," he said, adding that Mrs Batova has been issued a ticket for a Thursday morning flight from St. Petersburg.
