Rebel leader killed in North Caucasus

MAKHACHKALA, August 27 (RIA Novosti) - Dagestani warlord Gadzhi Melikov was killed in the Republic of Dagestan in Russia's troubled North Caucasus region, the local interior ministry said Sunday.
The warlord was killed Saturday morning together with other militants during a special operation in the republic's capital of Makhachkala, the ministry said.
During the operation, the interior ministry's troops killed three militants and the owner of the house where the militants had been hiding. All the persons have been identified, the ministry said.
Melikov, born in 1975, is charged with an attempt on the life of police and troops, the blowing of transport vehicles and other grave crimes, the ministry said.
