YEKATERINBURG, August 28 (RIA Novosti) - A massive haul of heroin from Afghanistan has been seized in the Urals, a representative of the security agencies said Monday.
On August 17, Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev warned of the threat emanating from Afghanistan, the world's largest opium producer, and the source said 160 kilograms (350lb) of heroin had been uncovered in Yekaterinburg, one of Russia's biggest cities.
"A large batch of high-quality Afghan heroin was seized at a vegetable storage facility on Friday," a spokesperson for the Federal Security Service said.
The source said that during a joint operation with local police and secret services in Central Asian republics, three people from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan had been detained.
The drugs had been delivered in a refrigerated truck registered in Uzbekistan.
