MOSCOW, August 29 (RIA Novosti) - A total of 864 militants have been killed and 708 terrorist attacks prevented in the North Caucasus since September 1, 2003, Russia's National Anti-Terrorist Committee said Tuesday.

The committee said 90 militants had been killed and 26 attacks preempted in the area in 2006.

"A total of 864 militants (including 135 gang leaders and 24 emissaries of foreign terrorist organizations) were killed when offering armed resistance, and 3,020 militants and suspected members of illegal armed units (including one hundred gang leaders) have been detained," the document said.

A total of 178 members of illegal armed units have laid down arms since the head of the committee, Federal Security Service director Nikolai Patrushev, said on July 15 that militants who turned themselves in to authorities would be guaranteed an unbiased trial.

According to the committee's data, more than 900 militant bases and over 3,000 arms caches have been discovered and destroyed in the last three years.

The committee also said 568 militants had been detained in the North Caucasus in 2006.
