VELIKY NOVGOROD, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - A cargo train killed three women in northwest Russia Monday, local police said.

Police said the train's crew was not to blame for the accident on the Moscow-St. Petersburg line, in the town of Chudov, in the Novgorod Region.

"Seeing the women next to the tracks, the engineers applied emergency brakes, but it was impossible to stop the heavy cargo train," a police source said.

He also said the women paid no attention to signal lights and alarm bells at the railway crossing in Chudov.

Police said the accident was not the first such accident in the Novgorod Region in 2006. In January, one man was killed and two injured when a locomotive hit a car.
