MOSCOW, September 4 (RIA Novosti) - According to preliminary information, the number of hostages taken at a pre-trial detention center in the southeast of the Russian capital could range between two and 15, a spokesman for the Federal Penitentiary Service said Monday.
"Three inmates have taken the prison warden hostage," Alexander Sidorov said.
Moscow police said extra police forces have been sent to the detention center to ensure public security around the building.
A law enforcement official said earlier several hostages were seized after about 40 inmates started a riot in the detention center, and that riot police were called to the scene.
Later reports, however, said there was no riot.
