YEKATERINBURG, October 2 (RIA Novosti) - Three people have died and nearly 60 have been hospitalized after allegedly drinking counterfeit alcohol in a Russian city in the Urals, a city hospital said Monday.

"About 60 people have been hospitalized within a month with toxic hepatitis," an official in hospital No. 5 in the city of Kamensk-Uralsky said.

He said their condition is very serious as their livers have been severely damaged and are almost beyond cure.

They are believed to have drunk ethanol-based glass cleaner sold in vodka bottles, according to the hospital.

Checks of shops and drugstores are being conducted in the wake of the mass poisoning.

Russia's interior minister called mass alcohol poisoning cases a national tragedy in June and urged a crackdown on counterfeit alcohol sales in Russia, saying about 42,000 die, and many become disabled, from alcohol poisoning every year.

"Poisoning by counterfeit alcohol in Russia has reached the scale of a national tragedy, and we must do everything to end sales of counterfeit products on Russian territory," Rashid Nurgaliyev said.

Russia's health authorities banned wine imports from Georgia and Moldova earlier in the year, saying most of the wine from the former Soviet republics is counterfeit and potentially harmful. Both those countries said the ban on their wine in Russia, one of their few crucial export commodities, is politically motivated.
