KHABAROVSK, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - Environmental prosecutors in the city of Khabarovsk, in Russia's Far East, are taking the investigation into an oil spill in the Amur River under special control.
An oil slick was discovered Friday at the confluence of a small river and the Amur in Khabarovsk. Some 400 kilograms (3 bbl) of petroleum derivatives could have spilled into the river. Work to clean up the spill is underway.
"The check [into the reasons that could lead to an oil spill] will last at least 10 days," the Khabarovsk Inter-District Environmental Prosecutor's Office said.
Some 50 large and small enterprises working with petroleum derivatives are located near the oil slick.
