New Progress docking attempt with ISS successful after mishap

22:32 26/10/2006
MISSION CONTROL CENTER (near Moscow), October 26 (RIA Novosti) - A new docking attempt of the Progress M-58 cargo spacecraft with the International Space Station has been successful, the head of Energia rocket and space corporation said Thursday.

A mechanical mishap occurred during the cargo ship's initial docking attempt with the ISS.

Nikolai Sevastyanov said Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Tyurin has confirmed the station's hatches have been sealed. He also said the ISS crew will not now have to conduct an emergency spacewalk.

The cargo ship was backed away from the station on a docking pin and a new docking attempt was ordered, a spokesman for Mission Control Center said earlier.

The first docking attempt was not successful apparently due to the failure of an antenna of the Kurs auto-docking system on board the cargo vehicle to fold away, but the structural integrity of the spacecraft and the space station was not affected.

A Russian Soyuz-U booster rocket with a Progress M-58 cargo spacecraft was launched to the ISS from the Baikonur space center October 23 carrying food, water, fuel, research equipment and expendables.
