MOSCOW, October 30 (RIA Novosti) - A remembrance ceremony for victims of political repression is taking place on Lubyanka Square in central Moscow, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported Monday.
More than 1,000 people have gathered at the Stone of Solovki, a memorial to the victims of political repression, opposite the former KGB headquarters.
Representatives of public organizations, State Duma deputies, members of the Moscow City Assembly, former political prisoners and relatives of victims of political repression are taking part in the event.
The Day of Remembrance for Soviet-era political prisoners was first marked in 1991. It was dedicated to the memory of a hunger strike by inmates of a labor camp in Mordovia, in Central Russia, which began October 30, 1974.
