NAZRAN, November 12 (RIA Novosti) - Forty gunmen have been neutralized in a special operation in the Republic of Ingushetia in Russia's North Caucasus, the republican interior ministry said Sunday.
Although authorities have announced that the active phase of the counter-terrorism operation in the North Caucasus is over, violence continues to affect the region.
"As a result of the operation carried out since August 4, twenty-three active members of illegal armed formations have been detained, nine militants have been killed and eight gunmen have surrendered," the ministry said.
During the operation to neutralize bandit groups, illegal armed formations and other criminal gangs in the republic, the law-enforcement bodies seized 13 grenade launchers, 14 automatic rifles, 12 pistols, more than 11,000 cartridges of various caliber and other ammunition, the ministry said.
