An earthquake measuring eight in the Richter scale struck 130 kilometers (80 miles) southeast of the Simushir Island in the central Kurils off Russia's Pacific coast last Wednesday. A tsunami alert was announced and more than 900 people were evacuated.
"Experts said several thousand tremors measuring four [on the Richter scale] could occur over this period," the rescue service in Russia's Far East said.
Since November 15, 136 aftershocks measuring four and more on the Richter scale have been registered near the Simushir Island in the central Kurils. The rescue service said there were no victims, damage or tsunami threat.
Rescue services also said last Wednesday that more than 20 earthquakes measuring up to 5.3 on the Richter scale had followed the powerful Simushir tremor in the Kurils area. No victims or damage were reported.
