TUMEN, December 12 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian passenger plane with 32 people on board made a safe emergency landing in the city of Khanty-Mansiisk in western Siberia following an engine failure, a local emergencies ministry spokesman said Tuesday.
"The AN-24 plane en route from Tumen to Surgut requested an emergency landing in Khanty-Mansiisk at 7.58 a.m. Moscow time [4.58 a.m. GMT]," he said, adding that one of the twin turboprop plane's two engines had failed.
The Soviet-made 44-seat Antonov An-24 first took to the skies in the early 1960s. About 900 of the planes are still in service worldwide.
The An-24 has been involved in several recent accidents, mainly in Africa. A fatal crash of an An-24 during landing in northern Russia in March last year killed 28 out of 52 onboard.
