MOSCOW, December 31 (RIA Novosti) - A major fire broke out Sunday at a large oil storage depot in the Tver Region in central Russia, an emergencies ministry spokesperson said.

He said the fire started early Sunday at an oil depot located in the town of Zapadnaya Dvina, 250 kilometers (about 160 miles) from the regional center Tver, engulfing 11 storage tanks with gasoline and fuel oil.

"The fire broke out at about 10.40 a.m. Moscow time [7.40 a.m. GMT]," he said.

"Out of 16 storage tanks, 11 caught fire," the official said. "Four storage tanks containing 200 cubic meters of fuel oil have been burnt, and seven are still on fire."

No fatalities or injuries have been reported, the spokesman said, adding that local residents in the radius of 500 meters from the oil storage have being evacuated from the area.

Eight firefighting units are attempting to contain the blaze, the source said.
