Atomstroyexport is building the Tianwan NPP in eastern China's port city of Lianyungang. The plant, which is being built under a 1992 bilateral agreement, features improved VVER-1000 reactors and K-100-6/3000 turbo-generators.
A Chinese source close to the project said China's nuclear experts checked security at the first block January 4-5 and cleared its two reactors to be put into full operation Tuesday.
The reactors will undergo 83 tests in the near future, and are expected to enter commercial service in the first half of this year.
The second block will be used in commercial projects from late 2007, Chinese officials said.
The first reactor block was connected to China's power grid in May 2006 and has already generated more than 800 million kW/h of energy for Chinese industrial customers.
Atomstroyexport is currently building five nuclear reactor blocks for NPPs in China, India and Iran. In October 2006, the company won a tender to build a plant in Belene, Bulgaria.
