MOSCOW, February 15 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin has submitted to the upper house of Russia's parliament the candidacy of Vyacheslav Lebedev for reappointment as chairman of the country's Supreme Court, the Kremlin press service said Thursday.

Lebedev, 63, has headed the Supreme Cout since 1989, when he was elected chairman for 10 years. In July 1999, Lebedev was reappointed by the Federation Council on the Russian president's representation.

Lebedev graduated from the department of law at the Moscow State University. He worked as a judge in a Moscow district court, and headed a people's court in Moscow. In 1984-1986 he was a deputy chairman and then chairman of the Moscow City Court.

Lebedev's term of office expires in July.
