TEHRAN, February 19 (RIA Novosti) - One Russian Muslim pilgrim was killed and three injured in a road accident in northwestern Iran, the Russian Embassy in the Islamic Republic said Monday.
"One Russian national died and three others are in the hospital after the traffic accident. One of them is in serious condition," said Vladimir Berezyuk, in charge of the Embassy's consular department, confirming that the victims were believers returning from their pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam's holiest site, in Saudi Arabia.
A senior police official in Dagestan, a largely Muslim republic in southern Russia, said earlier Monday that two residents of the republic died in the crash Sunday night.
Berezyuk said Embassy officials were enquiring about the circumstances of the accident, which occurred 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the city of Tabriz.
