6,000 fatalities from emergencies in Russia in 2006 - ministry

MOSCOW, February 20 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry has put the number of fatalities from emergency situations in 2006 at over 6,000, a ministry spokesman said Tuesday.

"Official information says 6, 043 people died in emergency situations and 8,150 people were injured across Russia in 2006", the spokesman said.

Over 2,847 emergency situations were registered in Russia last year, including 2,541 man-made disasters, 261 natural calamities, 44 bio-social disasters, and one major terrorist attack. Rescuers saved 6,668 lives in the reporting period.

The total material damage from the emergencies was 2,047,500,000 rubles ($78 million), the ministry said.
