MOSCOW, March 5 (RIA Novosti) - Mikhail Gorbachev has canceled a planned trip to Denmark to meet with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore as the result of a leg injury, an adviser to the ex-Soviet leader said Monday.

"He was out walking along a lane at his dacha at about 10 p.m. Saturday when he slipped and fell," Vladimir Polyakov said.

He said Gorbachev was only slightly injured, but that doctors recommended he refrain from traveling for the next few days.

"Mikhail Sergeyevich is at home now and feels fine," Polyakov said.

In Denmark, Gorbachev and Al Gore, an architect of stronger ties with Russia who co-chaired a joint cooperation commission under presidents Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin, were to discuss climate change.

Earlier media reports said the meeting would not be canceled and would take place Tuesday as scheduled.

Gorbachev, 76, who presided over the Soviet Union's demise and was a key figure in ending the division of Europe, has been active in private diplomacy since his resignation in 1991.

He runs the Gorbachev Foundation, a think tank devoted to international issues, is co-chairman of the Russian-German forum Petersburg Dialogue, and often travels around the world reading lectures.

Last November, he underwent surgery in Munich on his carotid arteries, which carry oxygenated blood to the brain, to prevent a possible stroke.
