GROZNY (Chechnya), March 14 (RIA Novosti) - An active militant base has been discovered in the Shatoi district in southern Chechnya, police in Russia's troubled North Caucasus republic said Wednesday.

"Police officers found an active militant base while conducting a search operation in a wooded area three kilometers (1.8 miles) south of the village of Benoi," police said.

Police said substantial supplies of food were found at the base, enough for 10 to 15 people.

Police also said an aerial bomb has been found on a residential plot of land near the capital Grozny. Measures are being taken to defuse it.

Although the last war in Chechnya officially ended in 2001, periodic bombings and clashes between gunmen and police still disrupt the republic's relative calm, with the violence often spilling over into adjacent regions.

Following the killing of Chechnya's number one terrorist, Shamil Basayev, Russian authorities announced a partial amnesty July 15 for militants who were not involved in major atrocities.

Officials say more than 600 militants have surrendered since then, mainly in Chechnya.
