ROSTOV-ON-DON, May 15 (RIA Novosti) - A spokesman for the consumer rights watchdog in southern Russia confirmed Tuesday that a local resident had died of anthrax in the Stavropol Territory.
The man was infected May 10 while killing an ox in his yard and died May 12.
"All necessary measures are being taken to avert an epidemic," the spokesman said.
The Stavropol Territory is an area of concern with regard to anthrax, and outbreaks of the disease periodically occur.
Anthrax is a potentially fatal disease affecting cattle, sheep and other mammals that can be transmitted to humans.
