MOSCOW, May 29 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's S7 Airlines has signed a deal with the world's leading aerospace corporation on the purchase of 15 Boeing 787 aircraft for $2.4 million at catalog prices and an option to buy another 10 planes of the same model, the company said Tuesday.

Russia's second-largest carrier after Aeroflot is currently modernizing its fleet and is planning to replace nine outdated wide-body Il-86 aircraft with more fuel-efficient and less noisy Boeing models.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a wide-body, twin-engine airliner currently under development by Boeing's Commercial Airplanes unit and scheduled to enter service in May 2008.

S7 Airlines, formerly Sibir Airlines, was renamed in March 2006, and encountered a series of difficulties last year, the most severe being a tragedy in Siberia's city of Irkutsk July 9 when an Airbus 310 crashed on landing at the airport, killing at least 124 and injuring 70 out of 203 people on board.

S7 has about 60 long-haul aircraft, including Airbus À319s and A310s, Boeing 737s, Tu-154Ìs and Ilyushin Il-86s.

In 2006, S7 logged over 40,000 flights, carrying 4.9 million passengers and more than 28,000 metric tons of cargo and mail.
