MOSCOW, June 1 (RIA Novosti) - Customs officials in Russia's Urals region launched an investigation into an attempt to smuggle abroad technical documents that could have been used to produce weapons of mass destruction, a customs service spokesman said Friday.
"Members of the Urals customs service have opened two criminal cases [into the smuggling] of technical documents that could be used in weapons production," the service said.
The Federal Customs Service said the "28 booklets of technical documents and reports" were worth $3.6 million. The charges envision up to seven years in prison and fines for anyone found guilty.
It was not immediately clear whether anyone was detained and where exactly the documents were seized. Russia's Urals region borders on Kazakhstan.
