SEOUL, June 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia has demanded urgent measures from Nigeria for the release of six Russian citizens kidnapped in that African country, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said Sunday.

"We are deeply concerned over what has happened in Nigeria," Kamynin said.

At about 5:30 a.m. (4:30 a.m. GMT) Sunday, a group of unidentified persons broke into a residential complex of Russian personnel in the southeastern Nigerian town of Ikot Abasi, abducting six citizens of Russia and killing their Nigerian driver.

The Russian staff worked at the Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) controlled by the Russian aluminum giant RUSAL.

Kamynin said the Russian embassy in Nigeria had immediately got in touch with the Nigerian foreign ministry and law-enforcement bodies after receiving the information about the abduction and demanded that "they take all necessary steps to release our compatriots."

"Our embassy in Nigeria will provide all the necessary support for RUSAL representatives who plan to arrive in the country soon to help release the Russian citizens," Kamynin said.
