The Supreme Court ruled to liquidate the Freedom and Rule of People party led by Viktor Cherepkov on April 2.
Cherepkov appealed against the decision. His party is accused of violating laws under which parties must have at least 50,000 members, and must establish offices in most of the country's regions.
The Freedom and Rule of the People Party was established in 2001. Cherepkov, who is also a member of the State Duma security committee, and currently co-chairs the Russian People's Patriotic Union faction led by another parliamentarian, Gennady Semigin.
Last year, the Federal Registration Service warned 16 parties that they would not qualify for registration under a new law due to insufficient membership numbers, and would be closed down or forced to become NGOs in 2007.
Only four of them have complied, and legal action has been launched against the other 12. The Supreme Court has already upheld 10 such complaints.
