MOSCOW, June 6 (RIA Novosti) - The Moscow city court has sentenced five smugglers of 150 kilos (330 pounds) of heroin to 10 to 20 years in prison, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported from the courtroom Wednesday.
The verdict against the offenders was passed June 1. In August 2005, the defendants allegedly smuggled the drugs into Moscow from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in a truckload of grapes.
Lawyers contested the verdict saying they would file an appeal with the Supreme Court. They said one of the defendants has 10 children, mostly minors.
