"A suspect in the robbery of a branch of the commercial bank Zernobank on the night of May 27, during which a bank guard was killed, has been detained," Olga Grishina said.
According to the police chief of the Altai Territory, the suspect was detained in Barnaul Thursday.
On the night of May 26-27, robbers made off with more than $600,000 after killing a security guard, whom police later said might have colluded with the thieves and allowed them in.
Police also suspect the raiders may have had inside information regarding the content of safety deposit boxes, as they appeared to have been selectively targeted.
Before fleeing, they destroyed the video surveillance system.
In a similar attack on a branch of state-run savings bank Sberbank in the East Siberian city of Chita May 12, robbers killed two security guards and stole more than $1.5 million in cash, as well as gold and silver bullion. Police detained several suspects in that robbery, local prosecutors said.
