MOSCOW, June 8 (RIA Novosti) - Two suspects in the May 27 robbery of a bank in the West Siberian city of Barnaul which left a guard dead have been apprehended, a spokeswoman for the local prosecutor's office said Friday.
"Both suspects in the robbery of a branch of the commercial bank Zernobank on the night of May 27, during which a bank guard was killed, were detained Thursday," Olga Grishina said.
She said the suspects, former security guards at the bank, had confessed to their crimes and police continued to gather evidence before pressing charges against them.
"Police have found and seized a sports bag with ruble notes and foreign currency stolen from the bank at an apartment owned by a relative of one of the suspects," Grishina said.
On the night of May 26-27, robbers made off with more than $600,000 after killing a security guard, whom police later said might have colluded with the thieves and allowed them in.
Police also suspect the raiders might have had inside information regarding the content of safety deposit boxes, as they appeared to have been selectively targeted.
Before fleeing, they destroyed the video surveillance system.
In a similar attack on a branch of state-run savings bank Sberbank in the East Siberian city of Chita May 12, robbers killed two security guards and stole more than $1.5 million in cash, as well as gold and silver bullion. Police detained several suspects in that robbery, local prosecutors said.
