ROSTOV-ON-DON, July 13 (RIA Novosti) - Police in southern Russia's Rostov Region have freed a local woman whose mother held her chained up in a room for several months, a spokesman for local prosecutors said Friday.

The spokesman said that after receiving a tip-off that the woman, born in 1966, was being held prisoner in the house, police entered and conducted a search.

"During an examination of a room in the house, a woman was discovered attached to a heating pipe with metal chains and a cable. She was immediately freed and taken to the local hospital," he said.

"A check established that the mother of the victim had been isolating her daughter for several months in the room, locking doors and windows and chaining her," the source said.

The mother said she had imprisoned her daughter to teach her not to drink.

Criminal proceedings have been launched, and an investigation is underway. The mother faces up to two years in prison.
