NAZRAN, September 12 (RIA Novosti) - A traffic police officer was shot dead by unknown assailants in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Ingushetia near the province's largest city, Nazran, local police said on Wednesday.

"The assault took place in the early hours near the village of Kantyshevo," a police source said. "Unknown assailants shot a traffic police officer while he was on duty using automatic weapons, and then disappeared from the crime scene."

The volatile province has seen a surge in militant attacks against police and civilians in recent months. Neighboring Chechnya saw two Moscow-led military campaigns against separatist regimes in the 1990s- early 2000s.
