Russia urges China to curtail pipe deliveries

MOSCOW, September 14 (RIA Novosti) - Russian pipe industry experts called on China to voluntarily restrict pipe deliveries to Russia, where losses from growing imports of Chinese pipes can total $360 million by the end of 2007 and lead to a decline in Russian pipe output.

According to the Pipe Industry Development Fund, deliveries of Chinese pipes to Russia will have grown 750% by the end of 2007, year-on-year.

The Fund's Director Alexander Deineko told China Iron & Steel Association (CISA): "Voluntary measures to restrict Chinese pipe deliveries should be taken immediately, as rapidly expanding deliveries from China have reached a threatening extent and can disrupt the Russian market."

Deineko said representatives of the Fund and CISA could meet in November to discuss the problem.

The Fund said the share of Chinese pipes in Russia's pipe imports increased almost 150% in the first half of 2007, with a 250% growth in deliveries from China.
