MOSCOW, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - Two policemen have been shot dead in Daghestanskiye Ogni, a town on the Caspian coast of Russia's north Caucasus republic of Daghestan, a local police source said.

An unidentified attacker opened fire at two policemen sitting in a car near the town's police station late on Tuesday.

The source said one officer was killed immediately, and the other died later in hospital. A search for the assailant is underway, and a criminal investigation has been launched.

Another attack occurred near a village in the Buinaksk District, in the central part of the republic, when two unidentified gunmen shot at four locals collecting wood in the forest. Two people have been hospitalized with varying injuries.

The predominantly Muslim republic of Daghestan borders Chechnya, the violence-stricken republic which has seen two wars with Russia since 1994. Chechen militants are believed to frequently cross into Daghestan, launching attacks on local police.

On September 30, nine civilians and a senior police official were shot dead by unknown assailants in two separate incidents in the republic.
