Russia concerned about treatment of diplomats at Iraqi airport

MOSCOW, October 3 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman voiced concerns about an attempt to search Russian diplomats at an Iraqi airport Wednesday.

"We assess the incident as rude violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and other generally accepted norms of international law, defining the status and immunity of diplomats," Mikhail Kamynin said in a statement.

He said that on October 1 employees of the London-based Global Strategies Group, responsible for airport security, threatened to use force while attempting to search Russian Embassy vehicles in Iraq.

"Thanks to the self-restraint and composure of our diplomats and their clear and proper actions, the incident was resolved," the spokesman said.

He said Russia would undertake all measures necessary to prevent such incidents occurring in the future. Russian Ambassador to Iraq Vladimir Titorenko spoke to the Iraqi foreign ministry and a note of protest was sent to the country's embassy in Russia.

"We hope that the incident will be taken seriously by the Iraqi authorities, including in the context of efforts toward the lawful regulation of relations with foreign private security structures," Kamynin said.
