YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, October 17 (RIA Novosti) - A court in Sakhalin has sentenced a 50-year-old man to 24 years behind bars for the rape of a six-year-old girl, a spokesman for the local prosecutor said on Wednesday.
After the attack, Evgeniy Chirikov left his victim bleeding in the street. The child was only found later in the evening, and was sent to hospital, where she underwent urgent surgery and spent several days in intensive care.
Chirikov, who has spent almost 30 years of his life in prison, denied the charges of rape, saying that the girl had given her consent to the sexual act.
As in the vast majority of countries in the world, children are considered unable to give consent to sex with adults and any form of sexual abuse of children is classified as rape, the court found the prosecution evidence sufficient to pass a verdict of guilty.
